John Steinbeck s Social Responsibility - 1747 Words
The mentally ill were not always treated the same way as they are being treated today. People began to ââ¬Å"treatâ⬠them from around the early 1800s, and they were put into mental institutions. Instead of being patients receiving help, they were more similar to lab rats for scientists, so they could perform inhuman experiments on them and see how they would react. However, it is evident in todayââ¬â¢s modern times that the mentally ill in the United States are being treated extremely fairly, and they are receiving the help that they need. But this improvement in treatment does not come without the hard work of numerous people throughout the decades. One of the many people is John Steinbeck. Steinbeckââ¬â¢s emphasis on social responsibility brought much light to many important issues in the country. Seeing as how Lennie, who is intellectually ill, is a one of the main characters, Steinbeck clearly believed that the treatment of the mentally ill was poor in the country. The town folk of Jefferson, Mississippi go to Emilys home after she is buried. The towns people explore Emilys home to find a skeleton in a bed. It is implied that he skeleton belongs to Homer Barron. Next to the skeleton is a pillow with a gray hair on top. Is Emily mentally ill or has being secluded by her father and alienated by t he town resulted in perverse actions? Emilys father issues seem to be the beginning of what will result in perverse actions. It is a strong possibility that a supportive home life could have prevented the killing of an innocent man. Emilys father not only secluded Emily from a romantic suitor but her family as well. Emilys great aunt went insane, the kin from Alabama had a falling out with the Griersons over land. The kin from Alabama did not even bother showing up to Mr. Griersons funeral. We remembered all the young men her father had driven away, and we knew that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her, as people will. (Faulkner 1000). Emily was in a state of denial for three days after her father died. Emily refused to let the body go and the town was going to have to result to law and force, although reluctant, Emily buried her father quickly. Emilys father left her with the house but no money. Emily had no means to support herself. When her father died, it got about that the house was all that was left to her; and in a way, people were glad. (Faulkner 1000). During this time period it was custom for a woman to find a husband. Young women aspire to find love, get married and, start a family. Emilys father ran away potential male suitors, keeping Emily secluded. Thus, Emily grew to be a woman above average age for marriage, Emily was labeled as a spinster. Homer himself had remarked-he liked men in the Elks Club-that he was not a marrying man. (Faulkner 1001). It appears as if Emily has set herself up for failure by falling for a man that not only did not wish to marry, but a man who was not interested in the opposite sex. However, not all fingers should be pointed at Emily, as Emily was refused the chance to be courted. When she got to be thirty and was still single. (Faulkner 1000). However, it is easy for a woman like Emily, who has never been around men romantically, to fall for a man who is full of charisma. Whenever you heard a lot of laughing anywhere about the square, Homer Barron would be in the center of the group. (Faulkner 1000). The towns people began to see Homer and Emily together on Sundays. The older towns folk were not happy with this union because they felt Emily should not forget her status. The towns folk even began to say that their union was a disgrace to the town and was a bad example. The towns people talked the minister into talking to Miss Emily, however, he would not disclose information, nor would he return to Emilys home. The town originally called her cousins from Alabama in hopes to separate Emily and Homers union, but ended up hating the cousins, claiming that they were more Grierson than Miss Emily had ever been. (Faulkner 1002). The town was upset that there was not a public break-up. Later Emily was witnessed buying mens items which led the town to believe that they did get married. Emily bought arsenic about the same time Homer Barron seemingly left town. When Emily was asked what the poison was for, she would not answer. Emilys house began to smell so bad that a judge received multiple complaints. Because the judge refused to make a move, the town took it upon themselves and sprinkled lime around her house. Finally, after Emilys burial, the entire town went to Emilys home and began to snoop around. In a closed off room the towns people found a skeleton that was posed in an embracing position. The pillow next to Homers skeleton was an indentation and for further evidence, a grey hair lays upon the pillow. All in all, if Emily was not alienated from the town and her father, these perverse actions may not have occurred.

Mercer: Maternal Role Attainment - Becoming a Mother The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationship between the role of the labor and delivery nurse to the ââ¬Å"maternal role attainment - becoming a motherâ⬠model. The model (MRA) was proposed by nursing theorist Ramona T. Mercer in 1991 to guide nurses in implementing the nursing process while providing care to the non-traditional mother. Keats embraces the thought of a painless death only while listening to the nightingaleââ¬â¢s song. This is because of the birdââ¬â¢s ability to be free, which wills Keatsââ¬â¢ to want a similar freedom, apart from the suffering and pain within human life. He even speaks as though the nightingale is immortal and incapable of the sorrow of death. Within the same stanza, which can be found below, Keats speaks of a magic this nightingale holds. It is as if Keats firmly believes in the nightingaleââ¬â¢s ability to transcend the natural world, into a world free of cares and lacking death. My heart aches, and a drowsy numbness pains My sense, as though of hemlock I had drunk, Or emptied some dull opiate to the drains One minute past, and Lethe-wards had sunk: ââ¬ËTis but through envy of thy happy lot, But being too happy in thy happiness, That though light-winged Dryad of the trees, In some melodious plot Of beechen green, and shadows numberless, Singest of summer in full-throated ease. (Lines 1-10) Though wast not born for death, immortal Bird! Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,ââ¬â While barred clouds bloom the soft-dy ing day, And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue; Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn Among the river swallows, borne aloft Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies; (Lines 23-29 ââ¬ËTo Autumnââ¬â¢) Again, Keatsââ¬â¢ implies a connection between human existence and the fact that there would be no meaning to life without the inevitability of eventual death to the seasons, life in spring and death in winter. Along with this rendition of life and death, Keats creates a feeling of comfort in his ecological representation of death. In ââ¬ËTo Autumn,ââ¬â¢ Keats displays a world in which fruit is ripe and flowers are budding. Colors are alive and bright. However, each season brings the death of the one preceding it. In other words, every season, as with every human existence, has the capacity of life and death. The ecology behind this declaration appears within the recurring and inexhaustible rebirth of natureââ¬â¢s beauty. On the other hand, I do not believe that Keatsââ¬â¢ sole intention was to display the beauty of nature. Keats often uses the exploration of nature and its imagery as a socio-political symbol of freedom, sovereignty, and harmony. Although autumn is beautiful and Keats uses this ecology to the political and personal strife found within every human being. I believe this to be true because Keats wrote ââ¬ËTo Autumnââ¬â¢ in September of 1819, shortly after his brother, Tom, died in December of 1818 of tuberculosis. Also the Peterloo Massacre, which occurred in August of 1819, about a month before Keats wrote ââ¬ËTo Autumn,ââ¬â¢ may have influenced his language and aesthetics within the poem. Keats was obviously pondering the concept of death and his undeniable belief in an existence after death. It is important to consider the context, both political and social, in which ââ¬ËTo Autumnââ¬â¢ was written. This is because ââ¬Å"ecocritics enlarge the vision(s) of texts and their role and function in our lives while challenging, the readers, to investigate and grapple with our personal understanding of humanity, texts, and nature itself (Bressler). Our understanding of humanity, text, and nature is often greatly influenced by the experiences we face from day to day. Keats is able to use his poetry to address a number of reoccurring ideas: the relationship between art and existence, the limitation of that existence and how those limitations are embraced by people, and the inevitability o f death and loss of everything that is capable of reproduction and beauty. Time episode Fionna and Cake and reading Berengier of the Long Ass, the expectations of genders are exposed through the reversal of roles in both of these pieces. The characters in these stories clearly demonstrate the expectations that certain males and females must negotiate in order to expose the problems when there is labeling of certain genders. Judith Butlers analysis of gender is that it is performative- meaning that nobody really is a gender from the start; after watching the video and reading the text for this exercise, t is clear that Fionna and The Knight expose the misconceptions of gender throughout societies today. In our society today there are certain notions that many people have about what are right and wrong for males and females to wear, think, and act. There are certain things that are expected out of males- a toughness about them, an attitude that declares them as the man of the house- that is unfairly labeled upon every male in our society. Females are expected to be the ones who constantly act girly and let the males do everything involving manual labor- this is an unfair label that is placed upon every female in our society. The video that Judith Butler takes part in is an example of a certain female who does not believe in conforming with the problems of the rest of our society- taking a stand against the normal ideas of the public. Judith Bakers ideas are expressed throughout Fionna and Cake and Berengier of the Long Ass, when Fionna , The Lady, and The Knight expose these misconceptions by swapping roles; The Lady and Fionna act as the males, while Prince Gumball and The Knight act as the females. The idea that Fionna and The Lady act as the males in these stories define the problem that our society has when it omes to the definition of males and females. There are certain expectations that must be fulfilled when it comes to being seen as a male or female, but in these two pieces (video and story), the main characters both reject the expectations, or try and fulfill them unsuccessfully. In the Adventure Time episode Fionna and Cake Fionna and Prince Gumball act as their opposite gender in many ways. Throughout Fionna and Cake Fionna refuses to completely fulfill these expectations that are placed among most females. Fionna goes through the majority of the video as a tomboy who would rather carry weapons in her person than make-up. However, by the end of the video she adapts to the normal expectations for females by dressing up in a dress and trying to flatter Prince Gumball. In order for Fionna to expose the expectations of certain genders, Fionna goes to the extreme limit when trying to act as a boy; for there is nothing more manly for a human-being to do than to save someones life. Fionna saves Prince Gumball, which in turn creates a relationship between the two that was not there before. It becomes evident that there is a gender swap in this video when Fionna is the one who is catching Prince Gumball when he falls from the ceiling. o infatuate Fionna, portraying the inner-man of Princess Ice, and getting the inner- woman out of Fionna. Fionna Justifies the ideas of Judith Butlers by showing the audience that it took awhile for her to find her preferred gender- switching preferences multiple times between the beginning and end of the video. Fionna proves that any female can be happy doing male-type things, but also can be happy with a man, which goes against the norm of being a tom boy. By the end of the story it is clear that Fionna chooses to give up the girly personality that is expected mong women, while consistently being herself, and attracting the Prince of her dreams. In the reading Berengier of the Long Ass, The Knight and his Lady successfully pull off an epic gender swap that The Knight would not be very proud of. Throughout the beginning of the story the Lady constantly criticizes her husband for being lazy and not being a chivalrous Knight. Because she questions the Knights manhood, the Knight forces himself to make a change. The Knight then tries to fulfill the expectations of Knights in our society by creating fake battles in the forests to impress his wife. Because he does a bad Job of faking his fatigue and injuries after these fake battles, the wife begins to catch on to his tricks. The wife then follows him to the next battle realizing that what he was saying the whole entire time was a fraud. Butlers applications to gender being performative comes into play here, because the Knight tries so hard to be a man -that his life turns upside down because of it. The Knights wife then brings back another guy to the house, knowing that because her husband is a woman in her eyes, he will not even think about doing anything to harm her. When the Knight realizes that his attempt at conforming to the publics interpretation ofa knight has failed, he feels as though he is a failure- for the only important in most knights life is the chivalrous way in which they live. A Knights expectation is to be the most brave, genuine, and honest guy of all; however, in this case the knights wife was more of a knight than he was. The Knight in this story tried to adapt to the expectations that are naturally placed on him, and instead of adapting he completely failed at his attempt. Most people are better off being their atural-selves than trying to fulfill the expectations that others place on them. After analyzing Fionna, Prince Gumball, The Knight, and his wife, it is obvious that being yourself leads to the most happiness between one and their partner. Fionna maintains her inner-boy personality and ends up being the happiest girl in the world. The Knight tries to change his personality and ends up watching his wife hang out with another man. Judith Butlers ideas really make sense after analyzing these characters because of the way in which characters can reject the expectations of their gender and be completely happy because of it.
